Where on campus can I connect to eduroam?

eduroam is available in all buildings across both Llandaff and Cyncoed campus as well as in the halls of residence buildings in Plas Gwyn.

Is the eduroam network secure?

The eduroam network uses WPA2 encryption, so all eduroam traffic at Cardiff Met is secure.

Is eduroam a free service?

Yes. There is no charge to connect to our eduroam network.

Why won't eduroam accept my Cardiff Met username?

To connect to the eduroam network you need to include the @cardiffmet.ac.uk realm at the end of your username. E.g. st12345678@cardiffmet.ac.uk or sm12345@cardiffmet.ac.uk . This is so that if you connect to eduroam at another organisation (university, hospital, museum etc) you will be connected seamlessly.

I am visiting from another university, can I connect to Cardiff Met's eduroam service?

Yes. Just sign in with your home university's network details. If you're not sure what these are, please get in touch with the IT department at your university.

Why does my device tell me that the network may be monitored?

Some devices (EG. Android Kitkat) warn you that the network may be monitored when you connect to eduroam. This is because we install a security certificate on your device in order to make the connection less vulnerable to unauthorised users being able to read traffic on the network. This Android warning is misleading, as using the certificate actually makes the connection to the network more secure.

My device shows a message, "Sorry! Your network should be enabled within a minute or two. If it is not reboot your computer."

This happens if you connect a previously registered device to the eduroam-setup network. Try connecting to the eduroam network and see if this connects successfully. If you can connect to eduroam you should tell your device to forget the eduroam_setup network. If you cannot connect to eduroam, then your device has become unconfigured somehow, e.g. you have reinstalled your operating system. Your device will need to be manually unregistered before you can reconfigure it. Ask the IT Helpdesk on extension 7000 or by emailing ithelpdesk@cardiffmet.ac.uk or the IT Advisors in the Learning Centres to do this for you.

Why am I forced to setup a pin code for my device when running the eduroam setup?

When connecting to secure networks some devices require that the user's device has security methods enabled. Certain Android devices will force you to install a password, screen lock or pin code in order to keep the device secure.

Why do I get a 'Cannot Join this network' message on my Apple device when joining eduroam_setup?

Apple's iOS 7 can sometimes refuse to join wireless networks. Some ways to get around this are to turn airplane mode on, and then off again or just turning the device off and then on again. If this fails then resetting the network settings on the device can resolve the issue (Settings>General>Reset>Network Settings).

Why does my Apple device tell me that the eduroam profile is unverified?

At Cardiff Met we use a tool to configure your device to make your connection to eduroam as smooth as possible. Because every profile is created for each individual user's connection Apple regards this as unverified. This is nothing to be concerned about and as long as you're seeing this only while using the eduroam setup tool you can trust the profile.

Why does my Android device tell me that there's no internet response from eduroam_setup?

The eduroam_setup website is known as a captive portal and is designed to redirect users towards a setup or registration webpage before they can access the internet. Different device types handle this in different ways and show different messages when they cannot access the internet. This message is nothing to worry about, and you should find that if you open the internet browser on your device you will be taken to the setup wizard webpage.

Why does my device keep connecting me to eduroam_setup?

If you have already configured your device to connect to eduroam you should tell it to forget the eduroam_setup wireless network so that it doesn't try to connect to this anymore. If you are unsure how to do this please ask one of the IT advisors at the Learning Centres.

Where can I download the certificate from so that I can connect securely?

If you used the connection wizard to setup your device you will already have this certificate installed and your connection is secure. If you are connecting manually and cannot download the link from the manual connection guide then you can get the certificate from here (right-click, choose save as).

NB. Some older Android browsers will not open this link correctly. If this is the case you will need to download the certificate and copy it to your device's SD card and then install from there using your device manufacturer's instructions. Please seek help from the IT Helpdesk on 02920 417000 if you aren't sure how to do this.
